| John Denver, the iconic American folk musician and The Poet For the Planet was born Henry John Deutschendorf, Jr in 1943. He composed and released over 300 hit songs, making him one of the most popular folk and rock musicians of the 1970s. While growing up, John Denvers family moved around the American South and Southwest. It is here that his connection between music and nature was aroused. His songs such as Thank God Im A Country Boy, Take Me Home, Country Roads, Rocky Mountain High and Calypso have a strong and deep fusion with nature.
John Denvers musical career started at the age of 12 when he was given a jazz guitar by his grandmother which he played and perfected up to his college years. In 1964, he dropped out of university and moved to singing in underground folk clubs, joining the Chad Mitchell Trio in 1965. He was to later quit the trio and pursue a solo career, releasing his first album, Rhymes and Reasons, in 1969. Though not an instant hit, one of its songs Leaving on a Jet Plane became a chart buster later that year.
He later released two albums in 1970, Whose Garden Was This? and Take Me Tomorrow. In 1971, his career started to flourish with the release of his next album Poems, Prayers and Promises, thanks to his Take Me Home, Country Roads single. John Denver would later go on to win and host multiple Grammy awards, winning worldwide acclaim. |
